Baby Sun Safety 101: UV Damage Facts
Pediatric optometrists warn that most of the lifetime ultraviolet (UV) damage done to a person’s eyes occurs during childhood and the risk for retinal damage from the sun’s rays is greatest in children less than 10 years old. However, the consequences usually do not become apparent until well after they are adults. This is because eye damage due to UV exposure accumulates over a lifetime and the cells of the lens of the eye cannot repair themselves and are never naturally replaced. We did not have the knowledge that we do today of the harmful affects of UV radiation on our eyes... starting sunglasses wearing as young as possible is critical for long term eye health!
Just as sun exposure to the skin can be cumulative and cause problems later in life, so can UV exposure to the eyes. UV radiation has now been linked to the formation of cataracts, which is a clouding of the crystalline lens within the eye. It also can cause growths on the white part of the eye, which are seen frequently in surfers and others who spend a lot of time in the sun, called Pingueculas and Pterygiums. Optometrists now feel that there is evidence that UV exposure can increase the risk of damage to retina (the inner layer of the eye) called macular degeneration, later in life.
"I have been advising my patients to wear sunglasses and to have their children use them for a number of years. My wife and I have been giving ro.sham.bo baby sunglasses to kids of our family and friends since we found out about them. These glasses, which have been tested to be 100% effective against UVA and UVB radiation, help to get the children started early in the protection of their eyes….in addition, they come in many styles, and sure look cute!" - Stanley Mestman, O.D. (doctor of optometry)
Damage & Lens Replacement Guarantee
We hate when things break! We are so confident that our Italian-made sunglasses can withstand life's daily wear and tear that we offer a full damage replacement guarantee if your ro•sham•bo frames break or get damaged in the first year of their use (in the course of normal, intended & expected use). See our replacement and guarantee page for full information.
We also hate when lenses get lost or scratched! If twisted at an awkward angle, it is possible for lenses to pop out of your shades. Have no fear! The lens is shatter resistant and small parts tested, so it is still safe for kids (and babies!) on its own. It is also extremely easy to pop back in to place (watch our videos). But, if you happen to lose a lens or even just scratch a lens, we got you covered: we offer replacement lenses free of charge!* All you pay for is shipping. We can’t have eyes unprotected! Kind of defeats the purpose. Use code "oneeyedwilly" at checkout to get polarized (gray) lenses free or polarized mirrored lenses 50% off.
*Lens replacement guarantee does not apply to AVN lenses or prescription lenses, unless 1-year replacement add-on was added on at time of purchase. For full details and to take advantage of these offers, please refer to the terms & conditions.
Scientifically Tested & Certified Safe!
Safety and quality of our Italian made sunglasses is our #1 concern here at Roshambo Eyewear. We have designed our frames with baby in mind, especially baby’s desire to put them in their mouth! Our frames have been laboratory certified as BPA free, lead free, latex free, heavy metal free, among many other nasty things!
They are also compliant with the U.S. federal hazardous substances act 16 cfr 1501 for small parts (fancy way of saying there are no bad chemicals and no small parts that might fall off and be a choking hazard for your little one!). All of our lenses are tested by our manufacturer and an independent lab to make sure they are compliant with all US, EU and other international UV standards to block 100% UVA/B/C rays. We also limit the paint in our product that might chip off in baby’s mouth by molding in our logos to the sides. Want proof of this science mumbo jumbo? Us too, so here’s the most recent lab results. Or you can download our remediated format and accessibility report.
Eco-Friendly Frame Materials
What’s better than a great looking pair of sunglasses? Two words: recycled sunglasses. Roshambo is proud to be working towards manufacturing 100% of our frames out of recycled materials. Did you know that in 2022 over 30,000 pairs of Roshambo frames were made with recycled material? That's over 750 pounds of waste reused to make our flexible frames! By recycling unused material into our frames, it helps to keep it out of our oceans and landfills. And it turns out that sunglasses are an ideal use for recycled materials, as they require only small pieces.
The process is pretty amazing and is a testament to our Italian manufacturers' mission to create a circular economy! The factory is able to separate the scraps made after molding our frames, and then chip them into pellets that can again be melted down and made into new flexible frames. So even though you may not see it, the rainbow of Roshambo frames is in every pair! We are thankful that we can make a difference, one frame at a time.
TAC Lens Technology
All Roshambo sunglasses are polarized. Polarized lenses reduce glare and eye strain, while still delivering 100% UVA/B/C protection. All of our lenses are tested by our manufacturer and an independent lab to make sure they are compliant with all US, EU and other international UV standards to block 100% UVA/B/C rays. Tri Acetate Cellulose (TAC) polarized lenses feature a new lens technology formulated for superior visual and polarization clarity. They have a scratch coating and block 100% harmful UV rays up to 400 nanometers. These lenses are very lightweight and highly impact resistant. Each batch of our polarized TAC lenses are also tested for effectiveness and were specifically chosen due to their lightweight design and high performance for all of your active families!
Category 3 Lens Darkness
All Roshambo lenses are Category 3in terms of darkness, which falls into line with the European standard for UV protective sunglasses and also meet regulated United States safety standards. Sunglasses with category 3 lenses provide a high level of sun glare reduction and good level of UV protection against strong sun brightness and light reflected off of water or snow. All of our sunglasses also have polarized lenses, which provides 100% protection against UVA, UVB and UVC rays.
